20/04/2021 - ColorTheSpectrum and why people really need to read the fine print

Writer's picture: Joshua GrossJoshua Gross

hello everyone,

I've made a slight change to how the blog will work from this point onward.

instead of me focusing on posting monthly only once, I will post when I find topics to discuss, as well as a monthly post on the 2nd of every month.

today, something caught my attention on twitter

what you're seeing there is a post by a group of autistic friends who go by 'The Autisticats' on Twitter & Instagram (highly recommend following them if you're interested in learning more about ASD as a whole) regarding this topic.

the Color The Spectrum event is a vile excuse for publicity and fundraising by yet another Autism Eugenics group, Next For Autism.

the problem is, they don't outright state that, unless you go looking at the mission statement of The Center for Autism & the Developing Brain, run by the same woman who runs this group.

This is something many neurotypical celebrities are involved in, and many are either too oblivious to notice or care, or just flat out ableist to back out from this. There are some (such as Jacksepticeye, a fairly famous YouTube personality) who have backed out after criticism from their communities, but most remain.

when you look into it, this group is run entirely by neurotypicals, with zero neurodivergent input, partners with Autism Speaks (a group which I have spoken... fondly of... before.) and is yet again focused on CURING or PREVENTING autism.

yet the guy behind it, another famous YouTube personality "Mark Rober" (a channel I legitimately enjoyed watching up to this point) who has an Autistic son mind you, seems to believe these people have the best in mind for Autistic people.

this group is doing everything in their power to essentially remove neurodivergency when being different is so important. It's an evolutionary benefit to be physically or mentally different, as it makes us unique, and can, at times, protect us from possibly species-eliminating threats.

before I finish this up, I just want to state that I want no hate sent over to any names I've mentioned in this post, as for some of them, it's not their fault that they clearly missed some very fine print (it's quite out of the way if you don't do a lot of research)

I won't get into my opinion on the others here.

well, that's it from me for this post, stay tuned for more!

next post will likely be May 2nd, little teaser, it's gonna be about what happens to discussion on Autism once Autism Acceptance Month comes to an end.

funnily enough, the answer may surprise you.

stay safe everyone!

- Josh.
